After holding senior software positions for over a decade in global businesses like AllPay.net, Capita, Openwave and The Hut Group – Mike Wood started Lightning in 2016.
We help our clients get the best out of Shopify
Spotting the huge potential of Shopify early on, Lightning’s reputation and close links with Shopify saw us quickly build relationships with FMCG stalwarts like Unilever and L’Oreal alongside the cutting edge of DTC in the form of Gymshark, Snug and ARNE.
We don’t hide behind project managers
As of 2022, Lightning has 10 full time developers living and working in Manchester, NW England. We have an additional team of international software engineers who support us remotely.
While our senior team may take the lead with clients and communication – we don’t, as a rule, use project managers. Every one of our developers, regardless of experience or standing, has direct contact with our clients on a daily basis.
We’re an agency clients enjoy working with
We’re a close-knit team, sharing successes and overcoming challenges together. We don’t use words like ‘culture’ because we strongly feel if you need to use a word like ‘culture’ you probably don’t have one (or one worth talking about, anyway.) We’re just people who try and do a good job, speaking plainly and building trust by delivering great work. Our relationships are generally long-term and we’re proud of that.
Lightning is a fullstack development agency primarily working with Shopify, Webflow, WordPress, Gatsby and AWS environments

Lightning utilises Agile methodology for the management of our projects (within the DevOps cultural philosophy.)
